Main Street Water Main - Project Limits

The Town of North Reading will be starting a project to replace the water main in Main Street from Burroughs Road to North Street over the next few weeks.  This project will replace the existing water main in Main Street with a new, larger diameter water main, and will include connections to the sections of water main installed in North Street last summer.

Weather permitting, construction is scheduled to start the week of March 21, 2022.  Construction will take place Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

There will be significant traffic impacts during this construction.  There will be lane closures and delays on Main Street and on North Street as traffic is diverted around the construction.  Both the Burroughs Road at Main Street and the North Street at Main Street intersections experience very high traffic volumes.  To the extent possible, residents are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid the construction area.

When travelling in the construction zone, please be aware that the operators of the heavy equipment are focused on their jobs and may not be aware of you or your vehicle.  Please pay attention to road closures, detours and Police Officers directing traffic in the work zones.

The project will also require temporary interruptions in water service as the older mains are removed from service and connections are made to the new water main.  The Department of Public Works and Water Department will work to notify residents and businesses when the water service in the area will be interrupted during the construction

If you experience an unanticipated period of no water or reduced water pressure, contact the Department of Public Works at (978) 357-5260 during Town Hall business house (Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm and Friday from 8 am to 1 pm).  During other hours, please contact the North Reading Fire Department at (978) 664-3112.

UPDATE: Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 28, 2022.
