- Guide the Town’s actions in maintaining, protecting, and improving its open spaces, parks, and recreational resources by setting goals and priorities for the next seven years, and
- Make the Town eligible for state funds to acquire and improve conservation and recreation land.

What has happened so far?
September 2019: The Town contracted and met with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) to help draft the Open Space and Recreation Plan.
October 2019: The Town assembled a Committee to guide the process. The Committee includes:

November 2019: The Town, the Open Space and Recreation Plan Committee, and MAPC will reached out to gather as much feedback as possible from community members through a town-wide survey. Fliers were posted throughout Town to encourage the public to complete the survey, which was mailed to all residents in the November 15 tax bill and made available online.
December 5, 2019: The Town hosted a public meeting to generate a community vision and priorities for the OSRP update on December 5. Click here to view the presentation given.
January 2020: Based on the survey responses and feedback at the December public meeting, the Town, the Open Space and Recreation Plan Committee, and MAPC began drafting priorities and recommended actions to improve North Reading’s open spaces and recreation facilities.
February-April 2020: Committee members attended board and committee meetings to provide updates on the plan draft and seek feedback from the Conservation Commission, Select Board, Land Utilization Committee and Community Planning Commission
March 2020: The Town and MAPC will submitted the Draft Open Space and Recreation Plan to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for approval to gain eligibility for state grant funding.
April-June 2020: Additional edits and information will be incorporated into the plan, including Select Board and CPC feedback, comments from the Commonwealth, and information gathered from the online Virtual Open House.
June 2020: Anticipated completion of the final plan update
