Open Space & Recreation Plan 2020

2020 Open Space and Recreation Plan (Final and Approved)

The Town of North Reading recently updated its 2013 Open Space and Recreation Plan. The Plan update:

  • Guides the Town’s actions in maintaining, protecting, and improving its open spaces, parks, and recreational resources by setting goals and priorities for the next seven years, and
  • Makes the Town eligible for state funds to acquire and improve conservation and recreation land.

The Town contracted with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) to draft the Open Space and Recreation Plan. A Committee was formed to guide MAPC's work. It included:

Liane GonzalezSelect Board
Phil HertzLand Utilization Committee
Randy MasonConservation Commission
Danielle McKnightTown Planner
Rita MullinParks & Recreation Committee
Maureen StevensOperations Director, Parks & Recreation
Marty TiltonParks Director

Through a public meeting, a widely distributed survey, and a virtual open house, the Committee and MAPC received feedback from the community. The virtual open house, in which 125 residents participated, was developed by MAPC in response to restrictions necessary due to the COVID crises and substituted for in-person opportunities to give feedback, and the survey had 450 responses.

The following presentation was given at the public meeting and a version of it discussed in individual meetings with the Land Utilization Committee, Conservation Commission, Community Planning Commission, Select Board and Recreation Committee.
