ONGOING CONSTRUCTION: Mt. Vernon and Elm Streets

The Department of Public Works, along with contractors, began work on April 25th to reconstruct and resurface Mt. Vernon Street between Haverhill Street and Park Street and Elm Street between Haverhill Street and Washington Street.  The entire road surface, along with asphalt curbing, will be reconstructed over the next several weeks.

Reclamation work to remove existing roadway asphalt and regrade the gravel sub-base ready for asphalt resurfacing was completed on April 29th and a  binder course on Elm Street installed May 3.  Over the course of the next 6-8 weeks, both roads will continue to be built simultaneously.  Separate crews will be mobilizing in and out of the project area to perform the following tasks:

  • remove / replace damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons
  • install asphalt berms
  • build new wheel chair ramps with granite curbs at sidewalk crossings
  • adjust structures
  • install top course of pavement
  • loam and seed all disturbed areas

There will be no on street parking allowed during this work.  All vehicles must be removed from the road for the duration of the work.
Work hours will be from 7am to no later than 6pm Monday thru Friday. Residents should expect some delays traveling on these streets. Emergency vehicles and school buses will be allowed passage and a detail police officer will be present.  Please use extreme caution when traveling in a work zone.
